to never do NaBloPoMo again. 10 days. jeez. I did better last year I think. I even had the post started, it was called "Happy Veteran's Day" and I never hit 'Submit' before I left for work. I then, obviously, didn't remember this fact until 12:22. Too late.
It's probably better this way. I am in an art exchange group and haven't finished my piece to send to Germany yet. I am volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club for their after school program once a week starting on Monday. The next art class that I'm doing starts pretty soon. I'm hosting a birthday party/UFC fight party this saturday and have not cleaned anything, bought presents or even thought about food for it. I'm working a 16 hour shift tomorrow. I have not done a single thing Christmas related yet. And I might have pinkeye. So, my apologies, NaBloPoMo, but this just wasn't the year for you.
Disclaimer: Yes, I also see the hundred typos in my blog posts. I don't want to go back and fix them because if that changes the date/time of my post, it won't look like I posted every day for NaBloPoMo. So just appreciate my typos as I have come to.
Thanks to Jen Lemen and Mike Randall for reading my blog and taing the time to write back to me on Twitter. That was awesome.
Right now I am watching my husband play a preview level of Braid on Xbox 360. It looks pretty cool. And the music pretty much rocks. The backgrounds are beautiful. Well that was an easy sell, he's buying the full game as I type. I can't wait to play it. The music sounds Irish to me. I don't really understand how you can die if you can always go back in time, but I suppose I probably have to play it to figure that out.
ok. I can't think of anything else. Consider this a post, please.
Today I went to a huge craft show in Hamburg, It was called Christmas in the Country, and my plan was to write a whole review of it. What I thought was cool, what was totally underpriced and awesome, unknown folk artists about to make their break. Instead, an open letter.
To all Western New York Crafters:
1. Do not be afraid of photography. Someone could just as easily buy one of your pieces and copy it. Let people take pictures. Especially if the reason they are taking pictures is to put your business online at no cost to you. Seriously, you should be confident enough in your art that when someone takes a picture of it you can be fairly sure that copying it would be futile. Be confident! I could have certainly taken a picture of the beautiful pottery, yarn jewelry, basket furniture, gourd sculptures, and nails hammered in to wood art pieces, and NEVER dne as well as you people. Don't fear my photos. Many other people, as well as I, want to promote you. We want to see WNY craft build and expand and sell to new markets.
2. Get aquainted with the internet. If I ask you if you have a website, and your answer is "I can't mass market like that," you have missed the boat. Web 2.0 is not about mass marketing. It is the opposite. I'm nat asking you if you can give me 23 pieces of art in 4 days, when I ask you if you have a website. I am asking you if you have a place online to display the beautiful work you do. The website can tell people what shows you will be at. You can actually do commisions for people that live in cyberspace. You can creat a virtual gallery that will display and advertise your work to the world. Do not be afraid of a website. Use it for what you want. Display your stuff, sell your stuff. Love your stuff and others will too. This is not hard. I will do it for you. This was totally not meant as a commercial but if you seriously cannot figure how to get your art on the internet, email me at kelly (at) kellygenet (dot) com and I will gladly be your website goddess. Don't be afraid of what you can do in the wide world of cyberspace. It is just waiting for you.
and I think I'm going to give up. Seriously. It's day 8 and I have yet to come up with anything good. I've almost forgotten to post 2 times now, and the other times are just me rambling. What am I accomplishing here? What is the point? Is the point to make a habit out of writing bad blog posts? Maybe. Maybe that is the point. Today is Saturday. Hmm..
Something for Saturdays.. I gotta come up with this quick, it's 11:36pm.
I can't think of anything. SO how about a list?
Things I love right now:
Crocheting
Charcoal pencils
Rock Band 2
Any kind of decent hand lotion
Madeleine L'Engle books
Mob Wars on Facebook (totally lame, I know)
Capybaras
That flickr search engine thingy where you pick the color. I can't find the link right now.
Sleeping
Towards the end of summer, The Buffalo Zoo finished and opened a major project. Rainforest Falls is a huge indoor exhibit with around 20 different species of animals. A lot of the species live together, including capybaras that live with caimans and ducks, capuchen monkeys that live with howler monkeys, piranhas that live with a giant anaconda, and several different birds that can fly wherever they want in the 80 degree paradise.
I've had my zoo membership for two years now, but it's value skyrocketed since Rainforest Falls opened. Even in the middle of winter, I can spend an hour or two in 80 degree sunshiny weather. The meteorologists are very good there. They predict rain every day at noon and 3:00 PM. I HIGHLY suggest going when it rains. And it seems that right after the rain, the sun comes out and the food comes out! Feeding time is best experienced when no-one else is there, because the birds will swoop down and perch right in front of you if you are careful. It's fun to see kids run around in awe, but it also pretty awesome to be the only ones in the rainforest.
Now, could you compare it to a Disney exhibit? Probably not. Sometimes the signs and plexiglass take away from the experience, but the waterfall is impressive when you are standing on a small rope bridge right in front of it. This place is huge for the zoo. It's a step towards a modern, natural looking. and exciting zoo, just like the river otters and sea lions were. The zoo still maintains its historical buildings and exhibits too, but people who are used to the Buffalo Zoo the way it has been will be happily surprised by what's inside Rainforest Falls.
Ok, plug time: A single-plus membership is only 55 dollars. Each time you go, you can bring a guest for free, and the whole thing pays for itself in just a couple visits. The best thing about having a membership, is that if you decide you want to go an hour before the zoo closes and just catch a couple things, you can. Or if you want to just spend 2 hours sitting in one place you can.
There is talk of more and more new things coming too. This coming winter and spring, zoo people will see a new zoo animal hospital, as well as a new children's zoo. The children's zoo is going to be based on a farm, and is expected to blow th old children's zoo area out of the water. Hey, just because I don't have kids, doesn't mean I don't like to pet the cow and the donkey too.
